Midcoast Symphony Orchestra “A New Artistic Mélange”
In this third series of the season “A New Artistic Mélange” the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra is excited to welcome guest conductor Jinwook Park to the podium.
The performance begins with the contemporary “Hymn for Everyone” which Jessie Montgomery wrote in 2022 as a partial response to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is reflection on hymns in general in which she has imagined the orchestra as a collection of choirs, with the melody repeated in different guises throughout the work
The next piece, Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, or so-named “Prague Symphony”. It is an audience favorite that features the richness and complexity of Mozart’s writing with wonderful and varied wind and brass parts.
The final work is “Enigma Variations,” composed by Edward Elgar. This was his first widely successful work and cemented his reputation. It consists of an original theme and fourteen variations. All but the theme and Variation 13 have titles consisting of the initials (or nicknames) of his friends and associates and purport to suggest something about each person.
During intermission “More with Midcoast” is featuring music by pianist Michael Bostock. Michael, a senior at Waynflete School, is the recent winner of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s 43rd Annual Maine High School Concerto Competition.
This concert will take place Saturday March 23 at 7:00 pm in the beautiful Franco Center, 46 Cedar St., in Lewiston.
