Mark your calendars! The fourth annual Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held at the Shaker Village on August 25, 2012 from 10am- 3:30pm. Special features new this year include: drumming, singing and dancing performances by the Penobscot Nations Burnurwurbskek Singers and the Passamaquoddy tribe’s Sipayik Dance Troupe combined with traditional storytelling and flute playing by David Sanipass, a member of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs. In addtion to these scheduled performances, there will be more than 25 Native American artists from among the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet tribes in Maine selling thier crafts and demonstrating their skills throughout the day. These artists represent some of the finest talent in the State of Maine and many of them have gained national recognition for the practice of their traditions and art forms. This year, we are proud to honor participating artist Molly Neptune Parker, who in 2012 was recently named one fo nine National Heritage Fellows by the National Endowment for the Arts; the same award was bestowed upon Sabbathday Lake’s Sister R. Mildred Barker in 1983. The Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held rain or shine. Come and meet the artists! This very rare gathering in southern Maine represents a blend of Maine’s oldest traditions.
