Our July 2016 Art Walk LA featured organization is Grow L+A of Lewiston, Maine. Shanna Cox, President, and Ryan Rhoades, Legacy Member, were kind enough to talk with us about Grow L+A’s vision and background.
LA Arts: When did the organization launch, and what brought this about?
Grow L+A: Grow L+A launched as a movement before it became an official 501c3. Grow L+A began in the fall of 2012, when a group of citizens inspired by the Sun Journal readers project on the fate of Bates Mill Five decided to band together to see if Mill 5 could be redeveloped by citizen initiative. In their work they realized that two principles guided them: the desire to see innovative, sustainable development in the twin cities, and the need to wisely use the cities’ existing historical infrastructure. Recognizing that these principles could be applied to other projects in Lewiston + Auburn, and wanting to sustain the current momentum beyond any one project, Grow L+A was formed.
LAA: What is your organization’s relation to the community of Lewiston Auburn?
GLA: We are founded by folks who are committed to Lewiston
Auburn’s future- the core of what we do and where we do it is the heart of L+A. We want a vibrant and sustainable future for our larger community, and one of the ways we contribute to that vision is through engaging community members.
LAA: What is its relation to the local arts community?
GLA: Grow L+A supports the local arts community by maintaining a living art exhibit on Art Walk nights, creating a place for kids to make art, and contributing volunteer hours to Ice Festival. We know that makers, artists and the arts community are drivers of community culture, economic activity, and a vibrant downtown.
LAA: How and why did you become involved with Art Walk Lewiston Auburn?
GLA: When LA Arts offered the windows of the former Grants building, the board of Grow L+A decided to use the opportunity to engage with the public about its work and projects. The art making attracts attention and captivates people, so it’s a good opportunity to connect with our neighbors about what Grow L+A is doing and why in a casual setting. In the beginning artists would draw local buildings and special places that were in danger of being torn down. It was a game the public could play to guess what was being drawn or painted for a reward like a gift card to a local business. We realized quickly that artists really want to express their own vision, and that people didn’t need to be bribed to pay attention. So we simplified the event to the free drawing format we have today. Secondarily, art making in the windows is about building community by using a vacant storefront in the heart of our downtown. We hope someday to no longer have a venue because the space is being remodeled and put back into everyday service. Our activity at the Grants building, and Art Walk in general, demonstrates possibilities for sustainable and positive reuse. Its also about art, joy, creativity, and fun!
LAA: Where can people go (either online or in person) to find out more about your organization?
